Manitoba Local Product

Stitch by stitch, bead by bead, we tell the story of our people. ~ Manitobah Mukluks

I have always been someone who enjoys supporting local companies and locally made products.  I have always been interested in culture and tradition of various backgrounds, so much so that I ended up getting a degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology at university.  I love it when two of my interests meet and I find an interesting, local company focused on culture and tradition that also provides an outstanding local product.

When I moved to Manitoba a few years ago I began looking for local products that represented my new province, items that Manitobans are proud of and are found and made locally.  I have found a few different items of interest but none that completely knocked my socks off.  Until now.  Somewhere through social media (I can't remember if it was Facebook or Twitter, or reading a blog, etc) I heard about Manitobah Mukluks, an Aboriginally owned company located in Winnipeg that designed and manufactured mukluks and moccasins.  I knew that I needed to find them and check out their product.

During a trip to Fort Whyte Alive in Winnipeg I had the opportunity to purchase a pair of Manitobah Mukluks Traveller Moccasin in chocolate colour in the gift store.  They are awesome! Now that the cooler fall weather is here they are on my feet all the time.  They are so comfortable, so warm, and so beautiful I just can't stop looking at them.  I keep going back to the Manitobah Mukluks website to look at other products as I plan to purchase a pair of boots for the winter as well.  They make all sorts of mukluks and moccasins - fur, lined, fringe, natural.  My absolute favourite is the Metis Floral Collection, Metis Mukluk - I love the colour, and the fur, and the beadwork.  Absolutely stunning.  Another interesting product is the Storyboots.  This is where the company has an artisan program and artists from an Aboriginal family provide their own family artwork design to Manitobah Mukluks.  Manitobah Mukluks then offers this original family artwork through a limited design mukluk or moccasin to a global network, with the family sharing in the profits and economic benefits.  What a wonderful concept and idea and a great way to share the rich culture of local Aboriginal communities!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this company, their product really deserves a look.  If you are interested in purchasing a pair for yourself you can use the dealers tab on their website to find a seller near you.  Manitobah Mukluks makes a fantastic product, they are a local Manitoba company, and they support the culture and history of the Canadian Aboriginal community.  Manitobans can be very proud of this company in all regards.  I know I will be enjoying their products for many years to come.
