Nova Scotia Love Letter

love letters

Mister Postman look and see, if there's a letter in your bag for me, I have been waiting such a long time, since I heard from that girl of mine. ~ The Beatles, song entitled Please Mr. Postman

Recently the Twitter account @CelebrateNS challenged its followers to create a love letter to Nova Scotia in the spirit of Valentine's Day. I decided to take them up on their challenge. I also decided to write a love letter to Manitoba.

It has been just over six months since we last saw each other. It has been too long. It breaks my heart for us to be apart. I dream of your shoreline and salty air. I miss the feelings of calm you bring to me, the feelings of nostalgia around every single corner. Your music, your friendly accents, your delicious food all dance in my head and I can't wait to see you again this summer. Please continue to take good care of my family and friends, they are strong Nova Scotians and represent you well, and I miss them. I tell everyone about you, how you are the most beautiful place in the world, how you bring a smile upon faces, and how you represent great family values and activities. I wonder if you believe me when I tell you that some day I will return home to you for good - build a little house near the water and spend the rest of my days with you. It is the truth. I realize now that all those years I spent with you I took you for granted. Your shoreline, your orchards, your hills and valleys, I miss them all. Even though I have been gone for almost five years, please know that my feelings about you have never changed. You are the one, the place I long to be, and you are always in my heart. Sometimes life requires us to leave the things we love in order to provide for our family and to challenge ourselves to new experiences and adventures, however please never doubt my feelings about you. I think of you all the time. I can't wait to see you this summer.

I know we met on a blind date and at first things didn't go so well. I had my expectations and so did you. We both failed to meet them in the beginning. For a long time I felt like I was cheating on Nova Scotia with you, and it held me back from enjoying all you have to offer. I am sure this made you feel rejected and sad, and you didn't deserve to be treated that way. As time went on, we both let our guard down and started to enjoy each other's company. We realized we both had great things to offer each other and it was the beginning of a great friendship. I think you began to enjoy my positive outlook, and I began to enjoy your many hidden treasures. So many people talk about you like you are the worst place in the world, but honestly you are pretty nice, and I do my best to defend you and show them that you are misunderstood. You have real beauty - canola and flax fields, beautiful lakes, amazing wildlife. You have so many hidden parts to your personality and I have enjoyed getting to know them all. You have a gentle soul, and I have found your people to be very welcoming and many have become close friends. I am even now starting to think that you consider me as one of your people too, and this makes me smile. Thank you for welcoming me with open arms. I will always hold a special  place in my heart for you, no matter where life takes me. I can't wait to see what new adventures you have in store for me this year.
